Scrimshaw Buck Knife

Pierce & Co.

ORIGINALS BY PIERCE & CO The nearly forgotten art of scrimshaw dates back to whaling days over 200 years ago. The intricate hand carvings and engravings done by American whalemen are accepted as one of America's most important folk arts. Pierce & Co has been hand engraving since 1963 on antler bone, which is naturally shed by deer, elk and moose in the spring, and regrown during the summer. Every meticulous piece is made to order by scrimshaw artisans in America, ensuring that no two pieces are ever the same.

E. Smith Mercantile is proud to present our first custom series of knives designed by local artist Olivia Knapp, known for her intricately detailed line drawings that mimic European engravings from the 16th century. Her tight cross hatching technique involves long slow and steady curved lines that articulate the surface contours of her subjects; creating supple and tangible imagery. Brought to life here by Pierce & Co's experienced scrimshaw masters.
